Using fragrance is ubiquitous and is a global human phenomenon. Over time, countless numbers of flavors and fragrances have found their way into everyday life, notably into foods, beverages and confectionery items; into personal care products (soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants, bath lotions and shampoos), and perfumes. There are 400,000 known plant species of both aromatic and medicinal plants, of which about 2000 species come from nearly 60 botanical families of essential oils bearing plants. Essential oils have been widely used all over the world, and their use is growing because of the strong demand for pure natural ingredients in various fields. Thus, large quantities of essential oils are produced globally to fuel the industries of fragrances.

Parfum has the highest fragrance concentration. Parfum will contain anywhere from 15% to 40% fragrance, however, concentration is between 20% to 30% for most parfums. Of all scents, parfums last the longest; usually six to eight hours. Parfum generally also commands the highest price of all the fragrance types because of the high concentration of fragrance. Eau de toilette (EDT) has a fragrance concentration of between 5% and 15%. It is cheaper than eau de parfum and is one of the most popular types of fragrance available. EDT fragrance will normally last for two to three hours. Eau de toilette is considered by some to be for daywear, while eau de parfum is considered nightwear. Eau de cologne, or EDC, has a much lower concentration of fragrance than the above perfume. EDC has a 2% to 4% percent concentration of fragrance and a high concentration of alcohol. It is cheaper than other types of fragrance. However, the scent only lasts for up to two hours. EDC comes in bigger bottles and more of the fragrance needs to be used. The essence, or concentrated extract, of a plant that comes from its leaves, flowers, or bark is known as essential oil. Distillation, either by water or steam, is used to extract this essence, which is then used for several health and therapeutic purposes. A variety of cultures, from the ancient Chinese to the Egyptians and Romans, have been using essential oils for roughly 6,000 years. Lavender has always been my favorite essential oil.
