Nina has been designing elegant footwear in New York City since 1953. Brothers Mike and Stanley Silverstein, Cuban emigrants, established a shop in a small loft, naming the company after Stanley’s daughter. Today the family-owned business has grown into a leading design house and manufacturer of footwear, handbags, bridal accessories, and jewelry. When visiting the archives it was so interesting to see how shoes have evolved through the years. I was amazed to hear Queen Elizabeth II wore Nina shoes to her coronation in 1953.

It was a pleasure getting to meet and speak with Nina Shoes’ creative director and lead designer, Bob Weber. When a fellow student asked Bob how he finds inspiration, he spoke of creativity from the city and finding innovation in apparel. I like how he discusses when apparel changes in lengths and sizes, shoes have to follow these trends to stay relevant in the market. Last, Bob discussed the importance of meeting a deadline. This stuck with me as sometimes I wait until the last minute to get things done. He was right when he said how sometimes the best ideas happen when you are under pressure of a deadline.

I feel luxury and mid-level shoe brands impact our everyday lives in the same way as having needs and wants. The mid-level shoe brands align with our needs, having our generic pair of shoes to keep you from walking around in your bare feet. Luxury shoe brands are your wants. When you want quality and craftsmanship, it comes with a price. Luxury shoe brands can give you inspiration and empowerment. I’ll never forget my time at Nina’s showroom as it was the first genuine showroom I’ve seen. Now living my life in New York City I'm excited for what’s next to come.
